The Reiki healing technique is a noninvasive bio-energy therapy in which a practitioner places hands on or near the body, interacting with the subtle energy fields of the client. This interaction promotes a balancing, restoring and energizing of the fields of the client, clearing out blockages and tensions and boosting immune and nervous system strength.

From Reiki.org, the International Center for Reiki Training:

An unseen 'life force energy' flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's 'life force energy' is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means 'God's Wisdom' or 'the Higher Power' and Ki which is 'life force energy.' So Reiki is actually 'spiritually guided life force energy.'

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

What happens during a session?
The client lies down (or sits) fully clothed and relaxes while the practitioner places their hands in a series of positions along the length of the client's body, sometimes touching directly with a light soothing touch, and sometimes by hovering close to the body to interact with their field only.

The client can have a range of experiences but certain sensations are reported across the majority of sessions: heat/vibration/cold/shocks felt from the hands of the practitioner, quietness of mind, heightened presence, deep relaxation, elation, security, wellbeing. Because of the depth of the relaxation, many clients after the session is over require a little bit of time to come back to waking consciousness; for this reason, it is suggested that an hour or two pass after a session is over before returning to stressful or high energy activities.

What results can I expect?
All Reiki sessions will resemble one another in terms of the basic experience because Reiki is always fundamentally an electromagnetic therapy. Sessions tend to induce the same state in the recipient: calmed brain activity, awareness and possible release of muscle tension, awareness or release of emotional trauma, feeling of wellbeing and contentment. With regards to healing an injury or disease, Reiki can empower the client's immune system to be more effective at executing its repair. For that reason, energy healing isn't looked at as a cure but instead more like a form of training or therapy. A session can induce a state where more resources are spent on repair and less wasted on unnecessary activity (anxiety, pain, fear, anger, etc.). The feelings of inner awareness and peace reverberate through the client for weeks after a session, often bringing further revelation and release long after working with a practitioner.

Reiki can also be used for people not suffering from an illness or problem to strengthen immune system awareness, improve mental clarity and intuition, improve emotional sensitivity, and increase muscle/body awareness. Don't think you need to be sick or injured or suffering from a debilitating illness to benefit from it!

How many sessions should I do/how much time should pass between sessions?

The number and frequency of sessions should be dictated by the severity of the condition and the client's drive to make progress or speed up recovery. For certain chronic conditions such as anxiety or arthritis, a weekly session could be appropriate to relieve much of the pain and suffering associated with the condition. In this kind of treatmemt plan, the therapy can facilitate a healing state which, coupled with other daily therapeutic activities such as yoga, meditation, physical therapy or talk therapy, would bring prolonged relief. When applied to an injury or disease that can be fought by the immune/injury repair systems, more frequent sessions will decrease healing time, restart stalled healing processes, increase available energy, and improve outlook for recovery and mood.

How can distant or touchless sessions be effective without directly touching the client?
Every living thing has an aura or electromagnetic field emanating from it as an emergent property of nervous system awareness (which is electrical in humans as well as the simplest single celled organisms). A human's magnetic field extends far beyond the body, as far from our bodies as our minds can perceive (to bring this idea to its logical conclusion, the human mind collectively extends as far as the end of the visible universe, and as early as just moments after the big bang). However, our conscious minds are most sensitive up close because locally there is less informational noise to sift through (think about having trouble receiving clear radio signal from one station when another transmitter is closer or stronger). On the quantum level, electricity has non-local properties, meaning it can share its information with other matter that is physically or temporally remote; this is known as entanglement. Through entanglement, mind can influence and perceive information in other physical objects even when those things are not physically present. The distant session then does not actually involve sending matter or "energy" across space/time, but instead it is a transmission of the state/process/program of doing Reiki.

Reiki applied to the aura rather than from direct contact can have a different sensory experience to the client, but the interaction between biomagnetic fields operates the same whether in contact or not. Sessions applied only to the aura or at a distance can be very relaxing for people who find a standard Reiki session to be intense. (In my experience, when distant Reiki was performed on me, I felt a deeper or quieter relaxation than when touch was applied. It could be good if you are seeking out Reiki to quiet your nervous activity).
